The Concept
As a pastor of over a decade, the principles of sin and judgment have always been some of the most entertaining to me. I cannot say that I have ever been that fond of telling someone that they are “living in sin” or pronouncing the judgment of God upon someone. The main reason for this, I think, is that I am not a prophet sent to pronounce judgment.
Instead, I am just a simple man that God called to love people the way He does.
This has not kept people from constantly asking “Is this a sin?” or “Is that a sin?”. It is like they think that pastors are given some secret sin list from which we can determine who is right and who is wrong. Tattoos, cigarettes, swearing, and R-rated movies seem to be some of the most common items asked about. Less common (but more of an issue) are subjects like pre-marital sex, gender preference, and alcohol binging.
The Jewish religion has a list of 613 commandments that a good Jew will not break. #365 and#366 refer to men not wearing women’s clothing and women not wearing men’s clothing (really important stuff, you know). #613 says that Jews must destroy the seed of Amalek. So…if somewhere on the planet an Amalekite still exists, then Jews everywhere are in big trouble.
The “Sin List” concept is pointless. But, we will always desire one.
So…I decided to start a little blog addressing the question that everyone seems to want to ask…
“Is this a sin?”
(Disclaimer: I have decided that, since I dislike the question so much, I will most likely be sarcastic, irreverant, and mildly offensive when answering it. You really should know this before you decide to read on.)
